Archived from groups: alt>autos>nissan (more info?)

I own a 2001 Sentra 2.0 SE manual transmission.
I couldn't physically move the shift lever to the left, so I had only 3rd-5th
gears. The dealer tells me there are no parts in North America, and I'll
have to wait. I can't afford to rent a car for 3 1/2 weeks! Any advice,
legal or mechanical?

Have you looked inside the shifter boot? Something may have dropped in,
or came loose in there and is blocking the movement of the shifter.
Also check the linkage between the shifter and transmission to make sure
they are all connected.

Hard to believe that they can't get that part..
Do you know exactly what part they are talking about? You could then
call around other states to see if that is true.
Perhaps check with the online junk yards.

Thanks for your reply, Bill. I have already checked inside the boot, and
everything is ok there. I don't have a lift or ramps, so I haven't checked the
linkage. The dealer examined my car, and said it needs a part they can't find
from any source in North America. He seemed to suggest that there was a design
problem, and the part is breaking in many other cars of the same vintage all
at once. I'd hope that if a bolt fell off, or part of the exhuast system was
constraining things, that they'd fix it, instead of ripping me off for a
replacement part.

I plan to get the part number and search myself for it. Maybe there's an
aftermarket part I could use- like a short-throw shifter, or something.
I'm hesitant to use a junk yard part if there is a design problem. I once had
an escort, and went thru 5 seats. The junk yard seats had a crack in the same
place where my seat broke 75% of the ones I found.

Thanks Snide, I mean Steve. I'd like to sue, not because Nissan doesn't have
an "odd-ball" part, and not because I can't afford to rent a car, and also
make payments on the loan, but because Nissan doesn't stock a part on a four
year old car. Nissan makes loans for longer than that! It is not like I'm
looking for the OEM ashtray in a Datsun B210!

Geez , I got passed the other day by a B210, and it was in really great
shape, no visible rust at all, and this in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where we
use a lot of salt.

Of course you would, you live in America don't you?

Good grief, ANY car part of any vintage car can end up on backorder if they
run out of them for some reason. (duh?) Sorry you/they can't find this
part but sueing someone over something like this is just plain silly.

I got my car back today. Only a three week wait for the part.
I called 1-800-nissanusa, and spoke to a guy in India, who passed the file
to Stephanie, in California, who passed it on to Wanda, who called me back
to tell me my dealer now has the part. The dealer (Colonial Nissan, Medford
Ma)replaced several additional parts that were not damaged, (for instance, a
new gear shift knob) and charged a $10 fee for hazardous waste disposal. I
asked "what hazardous waste?" He reduced the fee to $1.
I figured the "shop supplies" cost of $13.95 should cover such things as
trash disposal, considering they itemized a .40 nut. But the topper was a $44
charge for freight, ie, their cost for shipping their own part. They took off
these charges, reducing the bill from $749 to $529. With no arguments!
The service manager was like "ok, I'll take that off". Which makes me think
that they try to over-charge everyone, and know they have no leg to stand on
regarding their over-charges. I assume many people just pay with out
questioning such items. No wonder people use dealers for service only when the
have no other choice.
